Venice, Saint Mark's Square 7

















One particularly interesting item are the four horses on top of the cathedral's front entrance. They're well traveled, having been made in Greece most likely around 175 AD. They were sent to Constantinople to decorate a hippodrome there, but stolen when Venetian forces sacked it 1204. In 1254 they were added to the basilica. Later they were stolen by Napoleon and taken to Paris, but returned in 1815. I guess everybody likes horses.
