Much like Florence with leather, Venice is known for it's glasswork. In fact Venetian glass used to be such a world class thing that glassblowers were treated as royalty, though with a serious drawback. In return for having your every need catered to, you were never allowed to leave the island. And if you tried they hunted you down and killed you in creatively brutal ways to discourage others.
