Windsor Castle 2

You enter through a different gate and begin the tour in a grassy courtyard. This would have been a moat in bygone years.

Windsor Castle was built around 1076 by William the Conqueror, who if you will remember was building castles like mad to cement his power over the newly conquered England. It was one of his most important castles for strategic reasons, it was close to both the River Thames which was a key route into London, and it was next to a royal hunting preserve so it had plenty of food stores.
