Eventually you come to the first gate which is guarded by the Edward III Tower on the right.
After Henry II Windsor Castle became a favorite of royalty and was heavily worked on for many years, with new apartments and chapels added. Henry III and Henry VIII in particular spent a lot of time at Windsor. This continued all the way up until George I in 1714 who for whatever reason didn't like the place and showed no interest in it. It became more of a tourist attraction than a royal residence until 1952, when Elizabeth II decided to make Windsor her weekend retreat.
