London, Tower Of London

Our next stop was the Tower of London, named for the White Tower in the middle of the castle. The Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. It was one of 36 castles he built around the land so he could have troops anywhere quickly. And as fellow Norman William of Poitiers put it "certain fortifications were completed in the city against the restlessness of the huge and brutal populace. For he realized that it was of the first importance to overawe the Londoners."
