Venice, Saint Mark's Square 5

Finishing the square is Saint Mark's Basilica. This of course is was started it all, as the body of Saint Mark was brought here and a church erected in honor of his grave site in 828. That church was small and modest but that didn't suit the later Venetians and their opulent wealth so it was rebuilt and expanded to the large, mosaic covered building that exists today.

To the right of it you can see a bit of the Doge's Palace.
