Venice, Egress 4

We traveled under the Rialto Bridge. This version constructed in 1591. The first version was a pontoon bridge built in 1181, but Venice outgrew that and needed a real one so in 1255 they built a wooden one. In 1310 it got burned down during a revolt. Then in 1444, it collapsed under the weight of a crowd watching a boat parade. Then it collapsed again in 1524 so they finally said hey, let's build this sucker out of stone so it stops burning and falling down. Though he was not involved in it (having died in 1564), the bridge was built based on plans by Michealangelo, so it's often accredited to him.
