Valerie took us on a walking tour that started with Paul-Painlevé Square. It's near some of the oldest learning institutions in France and included this statue of philosopher Montaigne. Much like the statue of Saint Peter in Rome, rubbing his foot is supposed to bring you good luck. This was and is very popular with the students in the area, who would come get some luck before exams.
In fact this in not the original statue, the first one was made of stone but so many people rubbed his foot it was getting worn down to a nub so they stashed that one in a museum and put out this replica made of tougher bronze.
By the way since I have now touched two lucky feet, I 'm expecting to hit the lottery soon. I will keep you all updated.
