The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 as a display for the 1889 World's Fair. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, they gave him a 20 year permit so he could recoup his money from building it. Initially highly disliked by many Parisians for being too modern, everyone expected it to be torn down when that 20 years expired. It grew on Paris though, and eventually the world. It's now a global icon and the most visited paid monument in the world.
Gustave Eiffel engraved on the tower the names of 72 French scientists,
engineers and mathematicians in recognition of their contributions to
the building of the tower.
