Lucerne, Löwendenkmal

The Lion of Lucerne. This is something both Mari and I had been looking forward to the entire trip, and it lived up to the expectation. Hewn in living rock in 1820 by Lukas Ahorn on the initiative of Karl Pfyffer von Altishofen. It's a memorial to the more than 600 Swiss Guards that died on August 10th,1792 during an insurrection in Paris. Karl Pfyffer von Altishofen was a member of the Swiss Guard stationed there as well, but happened to be on leave in Lucerne when all of his comrades were slaughtered.
