London, Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace's roots begin in 1624 when Sir William Blake built a house here. In 1633 Lord Goring bought the house and left it much as it was, but created large gardens that remain much as they were now. In 1698, John Sheffield, who would later become the first Duke of Buckingham bought the land and started to build what would grow into Buckingham Palace. This went on until King George IV who was last to renovate the house, turning it into what is seen today in 1826.
St James's Palace was the official home of the royalty and Buckingham was meant to be a cozy retreat. It was Queen Victoria in 1837 who made Buckingham the official royal home.
