Hey Abbot

Across the square was the Cluny Museum which Valerie briefly led us through. Built in the 13th century it began life as the Hotel Cluny, though hotel had a different connotation. It was a home for the abbots of the order of Cluny and offered refuge to anyone who needed it. Hence the hotel. It remained as such until the 17th century when it was sold and changed hands a few times, most notably to Charles Messier, the famous astronomer who made the tower into an observatory.

These days its a museum dedicated to monuments, furniture and works of art from Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
