Florence, Piazza del Duomo

Emerging from the narrow streets and suddenly seeing this burst into view is a very dramatic effect, and done that way on purpose. The Itilian's love good drama. This is the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore and pictures don't do justice how amazing it is. It was started in 1296 but not completed until 1436. It was one of the most expensive projects of the entire Renaissance and for many years was the largest structure in Europe.
