Jedi Monks

Kind of a funky angled picture, but we passed where the Skellig monks used to get on their boats to go out to Skellig Michael. Skellig Michael is a tiny, rocky crag 8 miles off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean. Skellig is very literal, it translates to "steep area of rock" while the Michael comes from the Archangel. For reasons unknown people have been trying to live on that rock since 1400 BC. In 950 AD some Augustine Monks decided it would be a great place to form a monastery. It became a place of pilgrimage and self sacrifice as living there was incredibly tough. About a thousand years ago they left the island. Skellig Michael got some recent fame with the Star Wars film The Last Jedi. The little island Luke is found living on was filmed there.
