This all culminated in the Boeing P-26, nicknamed the Peashooter by Air Force pilots. The first all metal fighter it could fly faster, land shorter, and maneuver better than anything previous. They built 111 of them but they didn't see combat in the US Air Force (though they did in some foreign forces) because by the time WWII rolled around more modern fighters no longer had open cockpits and fixed landing gear.
