Going into WWII air power had established itself as a key component for the first time. Early on the Air Force chose the Seversky P-35 to be its fighter. One of the first generation with an enclosed cockpit and retractable landing gear. Unfortunately Severksy was slow to deliver and also angered the US by selling planes to the Japanese. So after 75 of them the contract was cancelled and two other airplanes went on to be the most famous WWII fighters.
