Green Mountain Merchant

Today's first stop, the Vermont Country Store. Famous all over the US, it started in 1897 as Orton's General Store in Calais, Vermont. Then the Orton family opened this store in Weston in 1946 and changed the name to the Vermont Country Store. They did well enough that in 1945 they started to put out a mail order catalog, which caught the eye of Edward Shenton of the Saturday Evening Post (a nice tie in to yesterday's trip to the Norman Rockwell Museum.) In 1952 he wrote an article about the store and since at the time the Post was the most widely read publication in America, interest exploded as tens of thousands of people visited the store and requested the catalog. It's been humming along ever since.
